About this edition
FINAL · GTM Biblical Greek Teaching Edition · Version 1.1 · 2026. Philippians remains the canonical GTM New Testament interlinear model. R16 re-audits all 104 verses and 1,641 word cards across PT1904 display text, lemma/morphology/Strong’s data, English and Amharic teaching layers, Modern-Greek pronunciation, article functions, textual notes, audio wiring, search, accessibility, and mobile/print behavior. Only concrete defects and stale metadata were changed; verified 1904 surface readings and the frozen Philippians audio engine were preserved.
Greek textual basis (GTM policy): the 1904 Greek Orthodox Patriarchal Text
(Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, ed. Basil Antoniades) remains GTM's
canonical primary Greek teaching/display text within this project — meaning the fixed running text used consistently for GTM teaching and display, not a claim that other Greek editions are illegitimate or textually inferior. The public-domain
byztxt/greektext-antoniades files are used as an electronic control source, but their own
documentation explains that the corrected 1912 text is the electronic running base, thoroughly compared
with 1904, with 1904 differences recorded in the accompanying collation. The electronic files also
regularize movable nu/sigma in specified ways. R6 therefore distinguishes electronic normalization
from the verified 1904 surface form instead of silently treating the electronic running file as a
facsimile of 1904. NA28 and UBS5 remain secondary modern critical
comparators; differences are noted as variants and are never silently substituted for the GTM running text.
The Ethiopic textual tradition (the Ge'ez Bible and its associated Ethiopian Orthodox
Tewahedo exegetical and liturgical heritage) is treated independently and respectfully in this project
— as a distinct, self-standing witness with its own integrity, not as a footnote to Greek textual
criticism or a mechanical by-product of the Greek-to-Amharic translation process. Where Amharic wording
touches on existing Ethiopian church tradition, that tradition is given genuine first-order weight rather
than being overridden by default by Western critical-text assumptions.
English and Amharic wording throughout (both the word-level glosses and the fluent verse
translations) is original composition for this project — not copied or adapted from any existing
published Bible translation.
Scope of this edition: the entire book of Philippians (all 4 chapters, 104 verses, 1,641
Greek words) is now rendered at full word-by-word interlinear depth — Greek, transliteration,
morphology, English gloss, and Amharic gloss for every single word, plus the fluent English and Amharic
translation of each verse. 1:1–1:11 was hand-authored first as the reference example; 1:12–4:23
was then produced to match that same format and policy set, and cross-checked so every verse's word count
matches its source Greek text exactly and every article/θεός gloss follows the
GTM policies above.
Edition status:GTM Biblical Greek Teaching Edition · Version 1.1 · 2026 · FINAL. Internal build R16 completes a full scholarly/teaching-layer audit while preserving Philippians as the canonical GTM interlinear model. The verified 1904 Patriarchal surface readings, reviewed Greek sequence, translation layers, morphology, pronunciation, article labels, textual notes, and frozen Philippians browser-voice audio path remain intact. R15 corrects the οἶδα Strong’s mapping to G1492, normalizes machine-readable Strong’s attributes on all 1,641 word cards, refreshes release metadata, and revalidates synchronized chapter search, accessibility, mobile/print behavior, and audio-word alignment.
Audio (GTM policy: Modern Greek pronunciation): per standing GTM
policy, this project reads New Testament Greek aloud using the Modern Greek pronunciation
system, not Erasmian. The 🔊 controls use a Greek voice supplied by the visitor's browser/operating
system through the Web Speech API; the exact installed voice can therefore vary by device. Each verse is
read extra slow, one word at a time, with a deliberate pause between words. The displayed
Patriarchal Greek remains fully polytonic. Only the speech copy is normalized for modern Greek TTS.
Single-letter Greek words such as ὁ, ἡ, ἢ, ὃ, ᾧ, ἃ, and ὦ receive a dedicated
complete audio-only pronunciation alias so that the engine reads the word's vowel sound rather than
announcing a Greek letter name; the alias is allowed to finish normally, with no early cancellation.
οὐ, οὐκ, and οὐχ likewise receive complete accented pronunciation aliases so modern Greek
TTS reads /u/, /uk/, and /ux/ instead of spelling the Greek letters separately. Audio is available by clicking any Greek word, the full Greek verse line, or the
“Extra-slow audio” button. This page remains self-contained as one HTML file.
Article policy: this project follows the GTM policy on the Greek article (ὁ, ἡ, τό)
— every article is preserved and tagged grammatically, but never mechanically glossed as English
“the” or a fixed Amharic definite marker; its function (definite, generic, anaphoric,
substantivizing, etc.) is judged from context. The interlinear gloss cell always shows the literal/lexical
Amharic (e.g. “አምላክ” for θεός), while the fluent Amharic line uses the natural contextual choice
— e.g. “እግዚአብሔር” for the one true God, but left as “አምላካቸው” where the text
ironically calls something else “a god” (Phil. 3:19).
Roman pronunciation: the Roman-letter line is sound-based and follows GTM's Modern-Greek pronunciation policy; it is not an Erasmian or orthographic transliteration.
Strong’s layer: every displayed Greek word is linked through its verified lemma to a Greek Strong’s concordance identifier. Mapping is lemma-based rather than English-gloss-based; spelling/headword variants in Philippians are normalized only for the concordance layer and do not alter the displayed Patriarchal Greek. Strong’s can be shown or hidden independently in Teaching mode.
Amharic morphology: the teal line translates/explains the existing Greek morphology tag in Amharic. R10B uses ተባዕት/አንስት/ግዑዝ ጾታ for Greek gender, explicitly labels Greek voice with ድምፅ, and uses ጥገኛ አኳኋን for Greek subjunctive without equating it to ዘንድ አንቀጽ.
Version 1.1 / R16 full teaching-layer consistency audit: synchronized every expandable Amharic morphology explanation with the standardized learner-visible Amharic morphology line, retained the verified PT1904 Greek surface and Modern-Greek audio behavior, and revalidated Strong’s, search, accessibility, mobile, and print behavior.
Textual Notes / የጽሑፍ ልዩነት ማስታወሻዎች (13)
The 1904 Patriarchal text remains the running GTM text. These expandable notes teach selected differences from NA28/UBS5 without replacing the Patriarchal reading.
ENIt is right for me to feel this way about all of you, because I hold you in my heart; for whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, you all share with me in this grace.
Teaching significance: The principal difference is plural “fruits” versus singular “fruit,” with the agreeing article changing accordingly. The theological sense remains closely related, but the morphology and translation number differ.
Teaching significance: The two groups are presented in the opposite order in the modern critical text, with some wording differences inside the selfish-ambition clause. No group disappears; the sequence and local wording differ.
ENWhat then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,
ENin keeping with my eager expectation and hope that I will not be put to shame in anything, but that with all boldness, now as always, Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.
ENOnly let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you, or am absent, I may hear about you, that you are standing firm in one spirit, striving together with one soul for the faith of the gospel,
Each fully interlinearized word is stacked in this order: Greek, Amharic pronunciation guide, Amharic morphology, Roman pronunciation, English morphology tag, lemma, English gloss, and Amharic gloss.
Morphology tags:N noun, V verb, Adj adjective,
Art article, Pron pronoun, Prep preposition, Conj
conjunction, Adv adverb — followed by case (Nom/Gen/Dat/Acc/Voc), number
(Sg/Pl), gender (Masc/Fem/Neut) for nouns/adjectives, or tense-voice-mood and
person/number for verbs (e.g. V-Pres-Act-Ind-1Sg = present active indicative, first person
singular; V-Aor-Mid-Ptc-Nom-Sg-Masc = aorist middle participle, nominative singular masculine).
The article: Greek has an article (ὁ, ἡ, τό), but its functions are broader
than a mechanical English “the”: it may mark definiteness, anaphora, generic reference, substantivization,
and other syntactic or discourse functions. Every article remains visible and morphologically tagged.
The English and Amharic glosses are contextual; the Amharic article cell shows “—” when no independent
Amharic word corresponds, while the fluent Amharic sentence expresses the function naturally.
Article-function labels / የarticle ተግባር መለያ: R7 adds a conservative syntactic label beneath every Greek article. These labels identify constructions such as noun phrase, articular infinitive, article with adjective/participle, or article with a title/name. They do not force every article to mean English “the,” and they do not replace contextual exegesis.
Roman pronunciation: this is now a sound-based guide to GTM's Modern-Greek pronunciation, not a spelling transliteration. Breathing marks do not add h; η/ι/υ/ει/οι/υι are represented as i; ου as u; αι as e; β as v; δ as dh; θ as th; χ as kh; and γ is represented according to its Modern-Greek sound. The Greek audio remains authoritative.
The Ethiopic-script line immediately below each Greek word represents the sound of GTM's Modern-Greek pronunciation approximately for Amharic-speaking learners. The Greek accent itself shows stress, so the Ethiopic line does not repeat an IPA stress mark. A hyphen is used only to keep adjacent vowel syllables visibly separate (for example Ἰησοῦ → ኢ-ኢሱ). It is not an Amharic translation or a letter-for-letter transliteration. The Greek audio remains authoritative.
δ /ð/ convention: the Amharic pronunciation guide uses the ድ-series only as an approximation, while the Roman pronunciation writes dh (for example δοῦλοι → ዱሊ → dhuli). Do not pronounce this as ordinary /d/, and do not substitute ዝ / z, which corresponds to Greek ζ /z/. The Greek audio remains authoritative.
Nasal + stop variation: in Modern Greek, word-medial μπ, ντ, γκ/γγ may be heard with prenasalization or without it, depending on word, speaker, and style. GTM uses the clearer prenasalized teaching guide where appropriate (e.g. πάντα → ፓንዳ), while the actual Greek audio remains authoritative.

Amharic Morphology Key / የአማርኛ ሞርፎሎጂ መፍቻ
The teal Ethiopic line immediately below the Amharic pronunciation explains the morphology of the Greek word in Amharic. These are labels for Greek grammatical categories. They do not imply that Amharic has an identical five-case, three-gender, tense/aspect, voice, or mood system.
Important subjunctive note: Greek Subj is labeled ጥገኛ አኳኋን. GTM does not equate it with the Amharic/Geʽez term ዘንድ አንቀጽ, because that term is traditionally associated with jussive/purpose-type verb forms rather than being a direct one-to-one equivalent of the Greek subjunctive.
Participle translation policy: Greek participles are not forced into one Amharic surface template. The morphology tag preserves the Greek form, while the Amharic gloss follows the participle’s syntactic function in context. Attributive participles may therefore be rendered with relative expressions (for example, οὖσιν → ያሉ in 1:1), while circumstantial or supplementary participles may use converbial, temporal, causal, or state expressions (for example, ὄντας → ስትሆኑ in 1:7). This variation is deliberate contextual translation, not a change in the underlying Greek tense-aspect or participle classification.
This section documents every morphological category and tag actually used anywhere in
this project — currently 1,641 tagged Greek words across Philippians, using
175 distinct tag combinations. It is both a key to the abbreviations in the interlinear grid above
and a standalone grammar reference, since this project is also used as teaching material
(GTM Biblical Greek, @GTMBiblicalGreek).
Every tag starts with a part of speech, then (depending on the part of speech) adds
case/number/gender (for nouns, adjectives, articles, and
most pronouns) or tense-voice-mood plus
person/number, or case/number/gender
again for participles, since a participle is simultaneously a verb and an adjective. Infinitives carry tense
and voice but no case, person, or number, since they function as verbal nouns rather than agreeing with
anything.
Expresses action or state; the most heavily inflected word class in Greek — marked for tense, voice, and mood, plus either person/number (finite forms) or case/number/gender (participles). ተግባርን ወይም ኹኔታን ይገልጻል፤ በግሪክ ቋንቋ በጣም ብዙ ለውጥ የሚደረግበት የቃል ክፍል ነው — በጊዜ፣ በድምፅ እና በሁኔታ (mood) ይለዋወጣል፤ እንዲሁም በአካል/ቁጥር (የተወሰነ ግስ ቅርጾች) ወይም በአገባብ/ቁጥር/ጾታ (ተሳታፊ ግስ) ይለያያል።
Adj
Adjective / ቅጽል
Describes or modifies a noun; agrees with it in case, number, and gender. ስምን ይገልጻል ወይም ያሻሽላል፤ ከስሙ ጋር በአገባብ፣ በቁጥር እና በጾታ ይስማማል።
Art
Article / አመልካች ቃል
ἐ/ἡ/τό and their inflected forms. See the GTM Article Policy: never glossed mechanically as “the” in English or a fixed marker in Amharic — its function is judged from context. ἐ/ἡ/τό እና የተለዋወጡ ቅርጾቻቸው። እንደ GTM የአመልካች ቃል መመሪያ፣ በእንግሊዝኛ ሁልጊዜ “the” ተብሎ ወይም በአማርኛ በቋሚ ምልክት ተብሎ በሜካኒካዊ መንገድ አይተረጎምም — ተግባሩ ከዐውደ-ጽሑፍ ይወሰናል።
Pron
Pronoun / ተውላጠ ስም
Stands in for a noun — personal (ἐγώ/σύ/αὐτός), demonstrative (οὑτος), relative (ὅς), reflexive (ἕαυτοῦ), indefinite (τις), etc. ስምን ይተካል — የግል ተውላጠ ስም (ἐγώ/σύ/αὐτός “እኔ/አንተ/እርሱ”)፣ አመልካች ተውላጠ ስም (οὑτος “ይህ”)፣ ዘመዳዊ ተውላጠ ስም (ὅς “የሚል”)፣ ራስን-ተመላሽ (ἕαυτοῦ)፣ ላልተወሰነ ነገር (τις) ወዘተ.
Prep
Preposition / መስተዋድድ
Governs a noun/pronoun in a particular case to show relation — time, place, means, cause. The preposition's form is fixed; the case of its object refines its meaning. ስም ወይም ተውላጠ ስም ከተወሰነ አገባብ ጋር በማዛመድ ግንኙነትን ያሳያል — ጊዜ፣ ቦታ፣ መንገድ፣ ምክንያት። የመስተዋድዱ ቅርጽ ቋሚ ነው፤ የተያያዘው ቃል አገባብ ትርጉሙን ያጠራል።
Modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb (πάντοτε “always”, μᾶλλον “more”). ግስን፣ ቅጽልን ወይም ሌላ ተውሳከ ግስን ያሻሽላል (πάντοτε “ሁልጊዜ”፣ μᾶλλον “የበለጠ”)።
Prt
Particle / ቅንጣት ቃል
A short word that shapes emphasis, connection, or nuance rather than naming or describing anything — e.g. the μέν…δέ correlation, γάρ “for”. ስም ወይም ግስ ሳይሆን አጽንዖትን፣ ትስስርን ወይም ስውር ትርጉምን የሚጨምር አጭር ቃል — ለምሳሌ μέν…δέ ማዛመጃ፣ γάρ “ምክንያቱም”።
Case (nouns, adjectives, the article, most pronouns) / አገባብ (ስም፣ ቅጽል፣ አመልካች ቃል፣ አብዛኞቹ ተውላጠ ስሞች)
Tag መለያ
Name ስም
Function ተግባር
Nom
Nominative / ባለቤታዊ አገባብ
The subject of a clause, or a predicate noun/adjective after “to be”. የዓረፍተ ነገሩ ባለቤት (subject)፣ ወይም ከ“መሆን” ግስ በኋላ የሚመጣ ተሳቢ ስም/ቅጽል።
Gen
Genitive / የባለቤትነት አገባብ
Possession, source, or description — typically “of ___”. ባለቤትነትን፣ ምንጭን ወይም መግለጫን ያሳያል — በተለምዶ “የ___”።
Dat
Dative / ተቀባይ አገባብ
The indirect object, or means/instrument, manner, location, association — typically “to/for ___” or “by/with/in ___”. ቀጥተኛ ያልሆነ ተሳቢ፣ ወይም መሣሪያ/ዘዴ/ቦታ/ተሳትፎ ያሳያል — በተለምዶ “ለ___” ወይም “በ___”።
Acc
Accusative / ተሳቢያዊ አገባብ
The direct object of a verb, or extent/direction with certain prepositions. የግሱ ቀጥተኛ ተሳቢ፣ ወይም ከአንዳንድ መስተዋድዶች ጋር ስፋትን/አቅጣጫን ያሳያል።
Number:Sg singular (one), Pl plural (more than one). Classical
Greek also had a dual number for pairs; it does not survive into Koine/NT Greek, so it is not used here.
Gender:Masc/Fem/Neut — grammatical gender
(every Greek noun has one), not biological sex. Adjectives, the article, and many pronouns agree with the
gender of the noun they modify or replace.
In the indicative mood, Greek tense marks both time and aspect (the kind of action). Outside the
indicative — in participles, infinitives, subjunctives, imperatives — tense marks aspect only,
not time.
Simple, undefined action viewed as a whole — the default “plain past” narrative tense; outside the indicative it denotes bare occurrence without specifying duration. እንደ አንድ ሙሉ ተግባር ተደርጎ የሚታይ ቀላል ያለፈ ተግባር — የተለመደው የትረካ ያለፈ ጊዜ፤ ከመግለጫ ሁኔታ ውጭ ጊዜውን ሳይገልጽ ድርጊቱ መከናወኑን ብቻ ያሳያል።
Perf
Perfect / የተፈጸመ ጊዜ
A completed action with continuing results in the present — “has ___ed”. የተፈጸመ ውጤቱም የሚቀጥል ጊዜ — በአሁኑ ጊዜ ላይ ውጤት ያለው የተጠናቀቀ ተግባር — “___ ኗል/ቷል”።
Plup
Pluperfect / ቀድሞ የተፈጸመ ጊዜ
A completed action with results that held at a point in the past — “had ___ed” (rare in the NT). ያለፈ ተፈጽሞ ውጤቱ የቀጠለ ጊዜ — በያለፈው ጊዜ ውስጥ በአንድ ወቅት ውጤት የነበረው የተጠናቀቀ ተግባር (በአዲስ ኪዳን ውስጥ ብርቅ ነው)።

Mid
Middle / መካከለኛ ድምፅ
The subject acts in a way that involves, affects, or benefits itself — “he washes himself”. Many Greek verbs are deponent: middle (or passive) in form but active in meaning. ባለቤቱ ራሱን በሚነካካ መንገድ ይሠራል — “ራሱን ያጥባል”። ብዙ የግሪክ ግሶች deponent ናቸው፦ በቅርጽ መካከለኛ (ወይም ተደራጊ) ሆነው በትርጉም አድራጊ ናቸው።
Pass
Passive / ተደራጊ ድምፅ
The subject receives the action — “he is loved”. ባለቤቱ ተግባሩን ይቀበላል — “እርሱ ይወደዳል”።
