Interlinear New Testament

How to move from a biblical passage to word-level Greek study.

Step 1 — Open the Interlinear

The Interlinear home page shows the currently available production corpora/books.

  1. Open Interlinear.
  2. Find the biblical book you want to study.
  3. Click Open … →.

Step 2 — Choose the chapter and verse

Inside the selected book, use the chapter/verse navigation to reach the passage you want. On a verse page, use Previous/Next navigation when you want to continue reading sequentially.

Step 3 — Read the Greek first

Try to read the Greek sentence before depending on the translation layers. Identify words and forms you already know.

Step 4 — Understand the teaching display

The word-level teaching display may present information in this teaching order:

  1. Greek text/form
  2. Amharic pronunciation
  3. Amharic morphology
  4. Roman pronunciation/transliteration
  5. English morphology
  6. Lemma
  7. English gloss/meaning

Use these layers progressively. Do not feel that you must read every layer every time.

Step 5 — Use word-level alignment

The Greek, Amharic and English word/token controls are aligned at word level. Use them to examine which teaching information belongs to the same Greek token.

Step 6 — Use morphology and lemma information

For each important word:

  1. Identify the surface form.
  2. Find its lemma.
  3. Read the morphology.
  4. Ask what grammatical function that form is performing in this sentence.
  5. If necessary, continue to Grammar or a Concordance.

Step 7 — Listen to the Greek audio

GTM fixed Interlinear audio: the current Philippians, Galatians and Ephesians Teaching Editions use server-hosted Modern Greek audio with a consistent male Nestoras voice. Greek playback no longer depends on the speech voice installed in your browser, computer or phone.

  • Select Extra-slow audio to hear the complete verse.
  • As the verse is read, the corresponding Greek words are highlighted in synchronization with the audio.
  • Select an individual Greek word to hear that word with the same GTM male audio system.
  • Select Stop at any time to stop verse or word playback and clear the active highlighting.
  • You do not need to install a Greek system voice, Windows Greek TTS voice, macOS Greek voice, or Greek language pack merely to use the Interlinear audio.

The reading is intentionally slower than normal conversational speech so that learners can follow the Greek text, pronunciation and word forms.

If audio does not start, confirm that you are signed in, check the device volume/mute setting, allow normal media playback in the browser, confirm that the internet connection is active, and refresh the page.

Step 8 — Read textual comparison notes

Where a textual note is present, the page may compare the primary 1904 Patriarchal text with secondary NA28/UBS5 readings. Read the note as a textual comparison, not as a replacement of the GTM primary teaching text.

Step 9 — Examine Relationships

Where the verse contains a Relationships section, use it to investigate connections supplied by the research layer. Open related material and then evaluate the relationship in context.

Step 10 — Use private study notes when signed in

Signed-in learners can use private study-state features provided on supported verses, including notes/bookmark-type functions where available. These do not alter the reference text.

Worked study method

For a verse such as Philippians 1:1:

  1. Read the complete Greek verse.
  2. Identify every word you already know.
  3. Use the teaching layer only for unknown or uncertain words.
  4. Parse one or two important forms yourself.
  5. Check the supplied morphology.
  6. Open Grammar for the relevant grammatical construction.
  7. Use a Concordance to compare other occurrences.

Interlinear → Grammar → Lexical/Grammatical Concordance → Exegetical Concordance
